Abstract
Figures of historical time and instances of the method. The paper highlights the interaction between the representations of historical time and the epistemological approaches to history, with particular emphasis on the process of discretization of time. This outcome, precondition for the building of the modern historical consciousness, is pursued through different pathways, such as the history of the philological method, the Querelle des Anciens et des Moderns, and the acknowledgement of the secular transformation of the earth. Notwithstanding the paradigmatic relevance of the great philosophies of history by Herder and Hegel, it is argued that the shift to an open-ended representation of historical time was established only in the scientific historicism of Ranke and Droysen. Droysen’s pathbreaking epistemological innovations are compared to the major tenets of the Annales School in France and it is further argued that the epistemological endevour to restore the intelligibility of history in a global, albeit pluralized, perspective brings Braudel close to the systemic approaches of the biology of his time.

Sommario
Figure del tempo storico e istanze del metodo. Il saggio presenta un contrappunto tra il mutare delle figure dominanti del tempo storico e l’elaborazione di istanze metodiche ed epistemologiche nei diversi ambiti del sapere che giocano un ruolo di primo piano nel processo della discretizzazione del tempo. Di questo esito, presupposto della moderna coscienza storica, si rintracciano alcuni percorsi, quali la storia del metodo filologico, la Querelle des Anciens et des Modernes, il riconoscimento della trasformazione secolare della natura. Nonostante l’importanza delle grandi filosofie della storia di Hegel e di Herder, si sostiene che la conseguenza estrema della discretizzazione del tempo storico, la sua apertura indefinita al futuro, sia sistematizzata soltanto nello storicismo scientifico di Ranke e di Droysen. In particolare quest’ultimo incorpora le conseguenze sia metodologiche che epistemologiche della nuova visione del tempo. Molti aspetti si ritrovano nella scuola francese degli Annales, in particolare con Braudel, che si rivela anche vicino all’approccio epistemologico della teoria dei sistemi della biologia a lui contemporanea.
