RIASSUNTO
In che senso ci è necessario interpretare l’insorgere della modernità come scoperta epistemologica della contingenza? L’obiettivo di questo saggio è di identificare all’interno del dibattito francese gli snodi principali del concetto di contingenza. All’inizio del ‘900, la percezione di una rottura epocale amplia la portata della questione della contingenza. Questa trasformazione si colloca al centro di una indagine a tutto campo nella quale, indagando comparativamente il dibattito tra filosofi, storici e sociologi, è possibile marcare prossimità e distanze rispetto agli argomenti delle scienze naturali.

ABSTRACT
In what sense do we need to interpret the onset of modernity as the epistemological discovery of contingency? The objective of this essay is to identify within french debates around 1900 the major shifts of the concept of contingency. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the perception of an epochal rupture opens the issue of contingency widely. This transformation forms the center of a huge investigation in which the respective discussions between philosophers, historians and sociologists are to be analyzed comparatively, underlining the proximity or distance to debates in the natural sciences.
