Abstract
[«Qui aliorum defendit errorem, multo amplius damnabilis est illis, qui errant». The censorship of Antoine Legrand’s Apologia pro Renato Des-Cartes]. This paper examines the condemnation of Apologia pro Renato Des-Cartes contra Samuelem Parkerum by Antoine Legrand by the Sacred Congregation of the Index, situating it within the broader context of the reception of Cartesianism. Through an analysis of the documents preserved in the Archives of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, the study reconstructs the censorship process that led to the prohibition of the work in 1719, focusing in particular on the two censures drafted by Giuseppe Maria del Pezzo and Matteo Basile da Parete, both transcribed in the Appendix. The analysis highlights the doctrinal and disciplinary motivations behind the condemnation, showing how the Apologia, while presenting itself as a formally orthodox and scholastically structured defense, was perceived as a systematic legitimization of Cartesian method and metaphysics.

Il contributo esamina la condanna dell’Apologia pro Renato Des-Cartes contra Samuelem Parkerum di Antoine Legrand da parte della Congregazione dell’Indice, collocandola nel più ampio contesto della ricezione del cartesianesimo. Attraverso l’analisi dei documenti conservati presso l’Archivio del Dicastero per la Dottrina della Fede, lo studio ricostruisce l’iter che portò alla proibizione dell’opera nel 1719, concentrandosi in particolare sulle due censure redatte da Giuseppe Maria del Pezzo e da Matteo Basile da Parete, trascritte in appendice. L’indagine mette in luce le motivazioni dottrinali e disciplinari alla base della condanna, mostrando come l’Apologia, pur presentandosi come una difesa formalmente ortodossa e strutturata secondo i canoni scolastici, fosse percepita come una legittimazione sistematica del metodo e della metafisica cartesiana.
