Abstract
In public discourse, the notion of environment is often invoked in the singular, underscoring the call for an integrated approach to anthropogenic environmental change. In the life sciences, however, its usage has become increasingly plural. After illustrating the scope of this pluralization through a series of examples, the text surveys the diverse meanings of environment explored in the contributions to the proceedings of the Naples 2024 Symposium Environment(s). Trajectories of a Concept (2024). On this basis, it underscores the heuristic value of the current relational understanding of this notion, fostering new trajectories of inquiry and opening fresh observational and epistemic horizons.

Nel discorso pubblico, il concetto di ambiente è spesso utilizzato al singolare, a sottolineare l’esigenza di un approccio integrato ai cambiamenti ambientali di origine antropica. Nelle scienze della vita, tuttavia, il suo uso è divenuto sempre più plurale. Dopo aver illustrato l’ampiezza di questa pluralizzazione attraverso una serie di esempi, il testo esamina i diversi significati di ambiente esplorati nei contributi agli atti del Simposio di Napoli Environment(s). Trajectories of a Concept (2024). A partire da questa esplorazione, mette in rilievo il valore euristico della attuale accezione relazionale del concetto di ambiente, e la sua fecondità nell’aprire nuove traiettorie di ricerca e inediti orizzonti osservativi ed epistemici.
