Abstract
[Revolution and history: Volney’s utopian project]. Volney’s Leçons d’histoire] constitute a major moment in the critical confrontation between Enlightenment historiography and antiquity in the light of the revolutionary experience. They have often been presented as a manifesto of post-revolutionary scepticism towards history, which led its author to deny the usefulness of teaching such a subject in schools. This article proposes to consider Volney’s history course at the École normale not only as a contribution to the Enlightenment historiographical tradition and to the use of history in the early revolutionary years, but also in the light of other texts by the same author. Without denying the disenchantment towards historical knowledge which is clearly present in his Leçons, Volney’s constructive proposals also emerge, aimed at relaunching history as a cosmopolitan science capable of building bridges between civilisations apparently distant from each other.

Sommario
Le Leçons d’histoire di Volney costituiscono un momento saliente del confronto critico tra storiografia illuminista e antichità alla luce dell’esperienza rivoluzionaria. Sono state spesso presentate come un manifesto dello scetticismo post-rivoluzionario nei confronti della storia, che portò il suo autore a negare l’utilità dell’insegnamento della materia nelle scuole. Questo articolo si propone di considerare il corso di storia all’École normale non solo come contributo alla tradizione storiografica illuminista e all’uso della storia nel corso dei primi anni rivoluzionari ma anche alla luce di altri testi di Volney. Senza nulla togliere al disincanto dell’autore verso la conoscenza storica, ben presente nelle lezioni, emergono anche le sue proposte costruttive, volte a rilanciare la storia come scienza cosmopolita capace di costruire ponti tra civilizzazioni apparentemente distanti tra loro.
