Ecclesiastical courts and popular cultures. Sources for the study of magic and “superstition” in the Kingdom of Naples (1581-1713). Between the second half of the 16th century and the first half of the 18th in the Viceroyalty of Naples, the repression of magical and “superstitious” practices constituted one of the main areas of ecclesiastical control. This volume presents a large body of judicial documents and inquisitorial correspondence relating to the dioceses of Melfi and Vieste. The sources, preserved in central and diocesan archives, allow reconstructing the relationships between symbolic practices, popular culture and ecclesiastical control dispositives. On the one hand they contribute to the historical reconstruction of a magical-religious universe already addressed by Ernesto de Martino's anthropological studies. On the other, they allow us to observe from the inside the censorial and judicial mechanisms put in place by the ecclesiastical authorities of the Counter-Reformation and the progressive application of the category of superstitio with regard to popular culture and religious minorities.
