Abstract

The Various Compositions are a small work promoted, collected and edited by G. Vico for the wedding of Duke Adriano Antonio Carafa - his ancient pupil and nephew of that Antonio Carafa whose Deeds he had written in 1716 - and Teresa Borghese, daughter of Prince Marcantonio Borghese, who was viceroy of Naples from April 1721 till June 1722 (see the Bibliografia vichiana, Napoli, Ricciardi, 1947, vol. I, pp. 106-107). The little book, printed by Felice Mosca, who also published most of Vico’s works, collects poems by over forty scholars and notables from Naples and beyond, as well as the dedication by Vico, his poems and his responses to single individuals. Throughout his occasional character - common to a widespread practice of the time and to the inspiration of Arcadia (of which Vico was a member since 1710) - the work has a historical, literary, and even typographical interest, that this facsimile edition aims to return to general advantage.
